Introduction.

BAKAS ( Bahagian Kesihatan Alam Sekitar) is another unit in KK Roban. The programme, which was formerly known as Rural Health Improvement Scheme (RHIS)  was launched in 1967. Under the programme, the rural communities are encouraged to implement and improved their enviromental sanitation.

The person incharge of the programme in rural communities are PKA or Pembantu Kesihatan Awam. In KK Roban their is two PKA incharge of the clinic operational area.

 

Scope And Objectives:

  1. To reduce the incidence of communicable diseases ( water, food and vectorborne) associated with poor enviromental sanitation.
  2. To get community participation for any health activities to be carried out in their village.
  3. To provide sanitary latrine to every household.
  4. To provide water supply for each kampong, e.g. gravity pipe, mechanical pump system, water tanks and sanitary well with hand pump.
  5. To mobilize rural population to construct house drains, general compound cleaning and animal fencing.
  6. To introduce the healthy village programme in rural villages.

 

Functions/ Activities of PKA.

  • Motivate and supervise the community on the construction of drain and to maintain general cleanliness around their houses or compound.
  • Motivate and advise the community on the method of refuse disposal system such as the construction of refuse pit etc.
  • Motivate and advise on the construction of fencing for domestic animals.
  • Motivate and supervise the construction of pour flush latrines, and flushing latrines.
  • Identify and supervise the construction of safe water supply systems.
  • Motivate, teach and get the involvement of the community in the preventive maintenance of their own water system.
  • Assist and participate in the communicable diseases control programme through:
      1.  Case investigation control e.g. in cholera outbreak.
      2. Taking of sputum slides for AFB.
      3. Taking of blood slides for BFMP.
      4. Defaulter tracing for TB.
      5. Contact tracing e.g. cholera, typhoid.
  • Assist in giving Health Education talks in various topics and other health promotion activities.
  • Carry out sanitary inspection of primary schools.
  • Carry out Vector Control activities.
  • Motivate and get community participation in Vector Control through gotong-royong.
  • Introduce and facilitate the healthy village programme in the rural kampung.
  • Assist in PEKA activities in the KK/KD operational area by:
      1. Assisting HI in the investigation of open burning.
      2. Assisting HI in the monitoring of indoor air quality.
      3. Assisting HI in investigating of public health complaints.
      4. Carrying out preventive maintenance activities for Ministry of Health Water systems.

Project:

There has been various project done by the PKA in kk roban operational area. these project is mainly to provide safe water supply, clean sanitation and to promote healthy life styles to the local people here. Among others are

  1. Gravity Pipe: which involve 28 longhouses in the operational area.
  2. Rain Catchment Tank: 32 longhouses.
  3. Flush Toilet/ Latrine: 1357 unit has already been given out.
  4. Heallth Education and Promotion
  5. "Gotong-Royong" with the locals .
